Illustrated after Gravelot with frontispiece, title-page, and 21 full-page plates in photogravure from negatives by the author. Bound by Bumpus in full blue crushed morocco with marbled endpapers, a.e.g., triple gilt-ruled covers, the spine with gilt titles and densely gilt panels, fancy dentelles. Original cloth upper cover bound in rear. Includes a Catalogue of Books Illustrated by Gravelot. Bookplate of N. MacEacharn.
Hubert-Francois-Bourguignon (1699-1773), called Gravelot.
Among the many of his outstanding works are Bickham's Musical Entertainer, and the Hanmer and Theobald's editions of Shakespeare.
"The elegance of Gravelot's designs has been remarked by nearly every critic who has written about him... The Goncourts... claiming the 'by the time he departed from England, the native elegance of his drawing, in which a memory of Wattteau is reflected, had attained during his long stay [in England] a complementary finish of English elegance.'" (Ray. French. Vol. I, p. 37.).
