Philadelphia: John C. Winston Company, 1948. Hardcover. Near Fine/Very Good. First edition. Some offsetting on the front fly, else near fine in a near very good dustwrapper with rubbing and small chips and tears. Inscribed by novelist Russell Janney, author "Miracle of the Bells* to Kathryn Cravens: "Dear Kathryn - Mr. Maugham didn't mention either you or I - but then - who is W. Somerset Maugham! We'll show 'em! Russell. Dec. 25th 1948." The recipient, Kathryn Cochran Cravens, 1898-1991, was a radio personality, actress and writer from Texas was the first female news commentator to be broadcast from coast to coast. *Pursuit of Gentlemen*, her only novel, was published in 1951, the manuscript for which won first prize from the National League of American Penwomen in 1948. Maugham on Dickens, Melville, Jane Austen, Flaubert, Dostoevsky, Balzac and others. Uncommon. No equivalent English edition. *Stott* 57.
