About This Item

Philadelphia, PA: Published for the Author, 1873. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. See photos for condition details. Hardcover, original 1873 publication which is inscribed (but not signed) by the author as a Christmas gift: "Presented to Miss Jane [last name unreadable] with Author's Complements, Dec 25th, 1874.". The book actually contains two titles, first one being The Great Trial (372 pages) and Flowers of Fancy (100 pages) for a total of 472 pages. The book itself is in excellent condition except for the exterior cloth which shows spotting along with some spine fading. The internal binding is good, no hinge issues. No other handwriting other than that from the author, no bookplates, no library markings etc. The front end page and pastedown shows a rectangle mark which is likely from a piece of paper sitting there for many decades. There were also two pages that had the upper corner folded, page 303 and 329. These have been straightened out the creases are still there. Paper is toned due to age and there is scattered foxing present. The first title page shows one of the heavier examples of this. This is an extremely rare publication, even without the authors inscription. This is the rarer edition which does not list a publisher on the title page. Other known copies stated the publisher as being Barclay & co., but this copy does not state this. If the spotting was not present on the exterior cloth at the degree that it is, this book would grade as near fine or better.

Terms of Sale

Yesterday's Book Shop (Member IOBA)

Purchases will ship by US Media Mail or Priority Mail (if buyer selects) and higher priced items may have insured placed on the order and will typically ship within one business day. Additional postage may be required for multiple volume books or books weighing over 5 lbs., but only in unusual cases. Insurance is available upon request though we normally place insurance on any item of $75 or higher at no additional cost to the buyer. Non-US sales will ship by First Class International or Global Priority. Additional postage may be required for multiple volume books or books weighing over 4 lbs.

We always take extra care in packaging and shipping. Books are typically wrapped in packing paper or bubblewrap before packaged in a sturdt shipping box. All orders, even those shipped by US Media Mail, will be given a USPS tracking number which will be sent to the buyer so they will know when to expect arrival. Please let us know if there is a book with incorrect or missing photos. We recently moved the inventory to Biblio and a title or two may have had issues with the photos being transferred over.

Yesterday's Book shop is owned and operated by a disabled veteran. Due to my limitations, I often have to rely on speech-to-text software to list the books. If the description has typos ("and pages" instead of "end pages", pace downs instead of pastedowns, guilt instead of gilt, etc,) PLEASE let me know so I can correct the listing. The software spells words by phonetics and can make errors that I may not catch.

There is a 30 day money back guarantee if the book arrives damaged or is not as described. Please contact us prior if you have any issues with your purchases and we will make sure you are taken care of.

About Yesterday's Book Shop (Member IOBA)

Yesterday's Book Shop is an independent, family-owned establishment. The store first opened in 1966 under the name Collector's Corner and was located in Western Maryland. The Collector's Corner dealt mainly in books but also sold stamps and assorted ephemera. In 1975 the name was changed to Yesterday's Book Shop when the store only offered books and printed matter. In the early 2000s the brick and mortar store was closed and now we only sell online.

All of the book pictures were taken at the time the book was listed and we never use generic or stock photos in any listing. If you would like additional photos or information on any listing please let us know and we will be more than happy to comply.
