A smart first edition of this illustrated work on the historical and cultural significance of the Indian subcontinent's fortifications. First edition. Illustrated throughout. An examination of the historical and cultural significance of the immense fortifications of the Indian subcontinent, with chapters on the Frontier Mail, the Khyber, a "Jirgah", and more. Written by Major General John Hay Beith, a British schoolmaster and soldier best remembered as a novelist, playwright, essayist, and historian who wrote under the pen name Ian Hay. In the original full black cloth binding. Externally, very smart with light rubbing to the extremities and the odd small mark to the boards. Original unclipped dust wrapper is also smart with light chipping to the extremities resulting in minor loss to the head and tail of the spine. Sunning to the spine with the odd small mark to the panels. The odd small closed tear. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean with minor age toning to the endpapers. Very Good Indeed
