Description:
London: Victor Gollancz, 1980. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Fine/Fine. Exquisite first edition of this important work of Soviet science fiction, signed by both of the Strugatsky brothers. A symbolically complex novel whose parallel narratives deal with intertwined themes of (bureaucratic) order and (natural) chaos on an alien world dominated by a seemingly endless forest. In an essay included as afterword to the 2018 translation published by University of Chicago Press, Boris Strugatsky acknowledged this as the brothers' "most complete and important work." Nonetheless, the work had a troubled early history, with its suggestive ambiguities earning the ire of censors in Russia, where for decades it could only be found in heavily expurgated forms. Samizdat copies, meanwhile, made their way to the West, allowing for translations of the complete text such as this one by Alan Meyers. First British (and first hardcover) edition. DJ: Very Good +; light toning to spine; wear and small closed tears at tips. Black grained paper over boards with black overlay on the spine with gilt and red lettering on the spine; author signature in red on the front board. 416 pp 8vo. Based on six years of talking with and traveling with Ali, Richard Dunham has produced the definitive story of Muhammad Ali as he has lived it. In this book, the heavyweight champion chronicles the battles he has faced in and out of the ring. The book is a multifaceted portrait of Muhammad Ali as sports legend; unapologetic anti-war advocate; goodwill ambassador; fighter, lover, poet, and provocateur. Growing up in the South, surrounded by racial bigotry and discrimination, Ali fought not just for a living, but also for respect and rewards far more precious than money or glory.…

Westminister, Maryland, U.S.A.: Alfred a Knopf Inc, 2005.. Octavo, hardcover, near fine in near fine yellow dj. First edition. 305 pages. A caper starring the plucky Royal Thai police detective Sonchai Jitpleecheep. It takes place once more in District 8---the seedy underground world of Bankok, where a dramatically mutilated dead body is discovered . A CIA body, as it were. Bad enough, but the killer seems to be Chanya, a hard-boiled, sweet working girl, one of the best at The Old Man's Club (an establishment owned by both Sonchai's mother and his boss, Police Colonel Vikorn). Vikorn concocts a cover-up story, but the real truth will be harder to come by and will necessitate Sonchai coming to grips with his job and its rigors and his Buddhism as he runs the gamut of Bangkok's prostitues, drug dealser, bad cops, corrupt military, and the murmurings of his own tender heart.
