About This Item

London: Chapman & Hall, 1863. [2], 211pp, [1]. With a final page of publisher's advertisements. Original publisher's blind-stamped green pebbled cloth, ruled and lettered in gilt. A trifle rubbed. Recent bookplate of Robert J. Hayhurst to FEP, very occasional light spotting. A crisp copy of the first edition in book form of two substantial critical essays by Elizabeth Barrett Browning, first published in the Atheneum in 1842 and later revised by the author for publication here. The first essay treats on the style and form of several early Greek ecclesiastical poets, including presbyter of the Church of Alexandria Clemens Alexandrinus and Apolinarius, who notably resisted the Julian edict which forbade Christians to study Grecian letters. The second essay provides an entertaining, if not hurried, précis of the development of English poetry from Chaucer to Byron. . First edition. 12mo.

Antiquates Ltd

Antiquates Ltd was established by Tom Lintern-Mole in 2007; we travel far and wide to buy, sell, and advise on rare books and manuscripts.

Concentrating on hand-press printing and early modern manuscripts, we pride ourselves on offering a varied selection of antiquarian works on a diverse range of subjects, leaning towards the interesting, the important, and the unusual.

We have a countryside bookshop in Wareham; we also regularly issue catalogues - do ask if you would like to be added to our mailing list - and frequently exhibit at regional and national book fairs in London, Bristol, Cambridge, Edinburgh, Oxford, and York.

We also offer a valuation service (for either insurance or probate purposes), as well as advice on library development.
