About This Item

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons. Very Good-. 1928. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Hardcover. First edition, second state with copyright page reading copyright 1927, 1928. The frontice has a black and white woodcut illustration of the Greene Mansion by Lowell L. Balcom. 388 pages plus one page of ads (ads on verso and recto). This is the third Philo Vance Mystery. S. S. Van Dine is the Pseudonym of Willard Huntington Wright. This book is in Very Good- condition and is lacking the dust jacket. The book covers have bumping, rubbing and general wear and small bits of fraying. The covers have some ground-in dirt and spots of color loss, especially to the front cover. The lettering on the spine of the book is noticeably flaked - and some words are completely flaked away. The text pages are generally clean and bright. There is a previous owner's bookplate on the front pastedown (Marie Pepe) . The front endpaper has a penciled previous owner's name and there is an inch long red ink mark at the top corner. "It has long been a source of wonder to me why the leading criminological writers - men like Edmund Lester Pearson, H. B. Irving, Filson Young, Canon Brookes, William Bolitho, and Harold Eaton - have not devoted more space to the Greene tragedy; for here, surely, is one of the outstanding murder mysteries of modern times - a case practically unique in the annals of latter-day crime." .
