Guida Del Vittoriale Degli Italiani by Antonio Bruers The Vittoriale Degli Iitaliani The shrine of Italian victories) Government Printing Office, 1949, unstated edition Soft cover in good condition. Text is clean and unmarked, binding tight. Cover is clean The Shrine of Italian Victories is a hillside estate in Gardone Riviera which overlooks Garda Lake in Lombardy. Famous Italian author Gavbriele d'Annunzio lived there from 1922 until his death in 1938. The house was confiscated by the Italian state in 1918-19 and was rented by d'Annunzio. Formerly owned by a German Art Historian, it was loaded with a wonderful collection of books and a piano once owned by Liszt. Much of the upkeep, repair and design was done by Giancarlo Maroni. d'Annunzio was basically paid off by the fascist government with various grants for the work and to keep him and his opinions out of Rome. They bent over backwards to keep d'Annunzio happy and quite as his popularity was a threat to their Nazi alliance. Part of their thinking was to make funds available to expand the property, to construct and/or modify buildings, and to create the impressive art and literature collection. This estate is a good example of the elements of Italian Fascist Architecture and was not completed until 1951. B&W photos, 70 pages
