About This Item

Salt Lake City, UT, U.S.A.: Deseret Book Company, 1990. First Edition, First Printing . Hardcover. VG+/VG+. Small name stamp on first free endpaper and foredge, but no other markings in book. No tears or dust jacket but some rubbing and small area at top of spine where surface color layer has been scrapped away leaving small white marks. Dust jacket in archival mylar Brodart cover. OUT-OF-PRINT AND VERY DIFFICULT TO FIND. This dictionary style guide to symbols from the scripture is an unparalleled instant reference to hundreds of terms used in gospel and scripture study. Many book dealers have long waiting lists for this one. The first section includes references to nearly 400 symbols, ranging from the common to the obscure. The second section includes 250 entries for the names and symbols for deity. The third section includes short definitions for another 250 theophoric and symbolic names. An example of one entry follows: "Cherubim. Cherubim are angels. In the Garden of Eden, cherubim were placed to guard the tree of life, so that fallen man would not partake of the fruit of the tree (Gen. 3:24; Alma 49:1--3) Huge cherubim of gold were placed on either side of the throne of Jehovah in the Holy of Holies (Ex. 25:18-22; 1 Sam. 4:41; 2 Sam. 6:22). Symbolic likenesses of cherubim were embroidered into the veil of the tabernacle (Ex. 26:31) and carved into the walls, doors, and panels of the temple (1 Kgs. 6:29-35; 1 Kgs. 7:29-36). In the future temple of Ezekiel will also be found images of cherubim (Ezek. 41:18-25). In angelic hierarchy, the role of cherubim is to guard the path which leads to Deity's presence. They are sentinels, so to speak, "The cherubim are obviously so stationed" in these various places, then, "to see that the holiness of God is not violated by those in transgression or those who have not complied with the proper rituals (see D&C 132:19)." (Joseph Fielding McConkie, Gospel Symbolism, p. 256.) At times cherubim are depicted as animals (Ezek. 1:1-10). This personifies their role as monitors and watchmen of the sacred things of God." Carefully wrapped in both white plain paper and bubble wrap to PREVENT shipping damage.
