About This Item

(London: Robin Garton, 1978) 0 906030 06 4. 4to; original dark blue boards, lettered in gilt on spine; pictorial dustwrapper; pp. 81 + (iv); maps; photographic plates in monochrome and full colour. Merest trace of foxing to endpapers and edges, occasional faint fox spot elsewhere. Very good to near-fine condition. "The Portuguese galleon Sacramento was one of the great men o' war of the seventeenth century. Built by Royal commission of teak, this thousand ton Leviathan mounted some 60 guns. But it was the massive bronze cannon in her hold, cast in Macao for the defence of Portugal, that made her maiden voyage in 1617 so vital. As with many of the great ships in history, her potential was never realised. Weighed down with her cargo, a freak storm drove her on to the rocks off Port Elizabeth, where she broke up. With her loss, Portuguese global strategy suffered an irrevocable reverse. David Allen traced and salvaged the Sacramento, bringing 40 bronze cannon ashore in spite of considerable interference. Research has brought to light the astonishing account of the surviving crew members who trekked 1,000 miles up the hostile African coast to safety." .
