About This Item

Wellington, NZ: A.H. and A.W. Reed, 1966 First edition, first printing. Personal copy of mountaineer George Lowe, with his bookplate adhered to the verso of the front free endpaper. Signed by Lowe on the half-title. Presented to Lowe by his mother and inscribed to him by her on the half-title: "from Mum / 1967". Publisher's navy cloth, lettered in gilt, pictorial endpapers illustrated with maps of the Haast; in the original pictorial blue dust jacket, with a photograph of the Haast Pass to the front panel, lettered in yellow and white. About fine, with a hint of wear to the spine ends, bookseller's plate to the front pastedown, else fine; unclipped dust jacket, with some light wear and rubbing to the extremities, bright spine, short closed tear to the front panel at the spine head, otherwise fresh panels. Overall, a bright and pleasing copy, signed by Lowe. The Haast in South Westland is a historical survey of New Zealand's Haast region that specifically focuses on the development of the main pass from a "pack-track" to a national highway. Notably, Pascoe was a legal officer for the Department of Internal Affairs as well as the Chief Archivist of New Zealand, and he drew on government environmental resources and records to create this text. Additionally, Pascoe was a writer and outdoor enthusiast and made several significant climbs in New Zealand and wrote his own books on mountaineering.. Signed. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Dust Jacket Included.
