About This Item

New York: Horace Liveright, 1929. First edition thus. Fine in fine dust jacket, with original slipcase.. Limited signed special edition of this Existentialist anti-Capitalist play, which sees a working man descend into madness after realizing he matters little to the rich people of New York. THE HAIRY APE was initially produced in 1922, incorporating expressionistic set design and staging typical of O'Neill's works. This illustrated edition elevated the play to high Art Deco, lending it an additional sense of urgency on the eve of the Great Depression, which upended the lives of so many laborers like Yank. 10'' x 7.5''. Original black cloth-backed color patterned boards. Original unclipped (no price) dust jacket with pictorial onlay. Black endpapers. Pictorial frontispiece with eight plates. 116 pages, many folds unopened. Signed by O'Neill to limitation page and numbered 105. In original black slipcase with pink title label. Top edge of slipcase split to one side; light edgewear. Jacket with a hint of toning to spine. Mild offsetting to pages facing plates. Sharp.
