About This Item
London and Sydney: Angus&Robertson, 1983. Not stated. Hardcover. Very Good +. 133 small HC, no DJ, black boards with white title and author on spine, very nice, clean, unmarked copy. Minor puzzle in that there is no publication data inside the book and no indication of a page having been removed. This is an autobiographical novel, written by the author, Dudley St. John Magnus, when he was 72, recounting his experiences in Australia during the Depression seeking the elusive Hanabeke. Magnus at the time was a solicitor's clerk sent to locate James Whitfield Hanabeke, as heir of his aunt Isabel Hanabeke. Hanabeke was not to be found, but Magnus' adventures and misadventures in search of him create a picture of life in the Australian backblocks. An interesting little book. From various sources I have found that Dudley St. John Magnus served in the British Army in Burma in WWII and later went on to write for the Times of London, the Winnipeg Tribune, and the Winnipeg Free Press, and also appears to have published at least one book of poetry. Definitely a "Renaissance man"!
