"The Mormon handcart pioneers were participants in the migration of members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (also known as the LDS Church) to Salt Lake City, Utah, who used handcarts to transport their belongings. The Mormon handcart movement began in 1856 and continued until 1860." The mass migration of the Mormon Handcart Companies was the most remarkable travel experiment in the history of the West. Much of this account, considered a classic in Mormon literature, is in the words of the handcart pioneers. Here is the story of 3,000 souls, from babes to the aged, and how they pulled their worldly possessions and fervent hopes across 1,300 miles of desert, prairie and mountain to Zion."
