About This Item

New York: Harper & Bros, 1953. Ignazio Silone (pseudonym for Secondino Tranquilli, 1900-1978) was nominated for the Nobel Prize ten times; he was awarded the Jerusalem Prize in 1969. A founder of the Italian Communist Party, he was later expelled due to his opposition to Stalin. He was one of the great Italian writers who came to real prominance in the post-WW II era. This is a Very Good (Plus) to Near Fine copy of the First Edition (stated). Translation from the original Italian by Darina Silone. Blue-green paper-covered boards, with a black cloth spine with titling in red and white. Clean text; 314 pages. A nice copy, with some light sunning to the top of the boards and what might be an ink erasure on front paste-down. The dustjacket has been clipped, with a (newer) stamped price on the bottom of the front flap. There is a slight stain on the top of the front panel, Mild edgewear, a small chip at the head of the spine, and cellotape residue evident on the inside. This jacket presents much better than it sounds in the description! In an archival plastic protector. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. First Paperbound Edition.. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Very Good.
