London: Bradbury and Evans. VG book. 1st illus ed. Full red morroco with elaborate gilt.. 1854. 1st illus ed.. Hardcover. VG book. John Leech engravings. Orig front/back panels & spine bound in @ back. TEG. Riviere SIGNED the elaborate gilt turn ins . SIGNED "Bound by Riviere & Son" on the turn in. Binding done after 1880. Pre 1880 Rivieres did NOT include the word "son". Five gilt dotted raised ribs. All panels w elaborate floral design. NEAR FINE contents. Verso of 1st plate's verso lightly foxed, no other plates similarly effected. Text with occasional foxing spots, otherwise clean & bright. Tips & lower edges scuffed. Outer hinges lower half cracked, easily repaired. Even so, hinges sound. Gilt top edge bright & shiny as new, other edges clean, no foxing. Also, book stays closed when stood on its spine. This seems to be the most elaborate binding Riviere used for these Surtees books. See same book in BIBLIO for more scans. .
