About This Item

London: Ward, Lock & Bowden, Limited, 1893. Samuel Lover (1797-1868) was multi-talented; this is probably his best-known novel, first published in 1841. This is a ldecorative Victorian edition without a publication date. Quercus speculates that it dates from 1890-95. Red cloth binding, beveled, with a gilt decoration and titling in gilt on the spine and front cover. Clean text; 338 pages, with numerous black-and-white illustrations. Top-edge is gilt. The illustrator is not named, but it is Henry Matthew Brock (1875-1960) whose long career as an illustrator also included work for the D-Oyly Carte Opera Company, and even for comic books! Mild rubbing, spine darkened, and three light spots on the front cover.. Later Printing. Decorative Cloth. Very Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
