Accompanied by a biographical essay by Carolyn Kinder Carr, this collection of seventy-five of Hans Namuth's photographic portraits, taken between 1950 and 1989, shows how his friendships with his often reclusive subjects and his determination to capture the essence of each person's style resulted in revealing portraits of notable cultural figures, especially painters such as Willem and Elaine de Kooning, Mark Rothko, Roy Lichtenstein, Jasper Johns, Andrew Wyeth, Helen Frankenthaler, Andy Warhol and Jackson Pollack. A Large Hardcover Folio - approx. 12" tall x 9", with both black and white and color plates. 166 pages, with index and bibliography, plus a foreward by Alan Fern. Published for an exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in 1999 by the Smithsonian Institution Press. .
