About This Item

Stratford - Upon - Avon : Shakespeare Head Press , 1913. Limited to 780 numbered copies, this being number 14. xvi, 327 pages, with a collotype facsimile, protected by a tissue guard, tucked into a pocket between the rear paste down and the back board. Harold Child's copy, with Bullen's presentation signature -"Harold Child d.d. A. H. Bullen" in ink fron end page under a tipped in one page ALS from A.H. Bullen, dated 13/X/13 (Oct. 13, 1913) and on Shakespeare Head Press letterhead - "My dear Child, I am sending you an advanced copy of Gabriel Harvey's 'Marginalia' , which has been in the stocks so long. Don't miss the collotype facsimile in the pocket at the end of the volume. In three weeks - not before, I fear - the book will be published, and a ? review ? will be distributed. ( One of course will be sent to The Times.)" Bullen then goes on to talk of 2 other future publications of interest to Child and The Times. A. H. Bullen, (Arthur Henry, 1857-1920) was a British editor, publisher, and founder of the Shakespeare Head Press, which for its first decades was a publisher of fine editions in the tradition of the Kelmscott Press. Harold Child, (1869-1945) was a literary critic and writer who was prominent in the development of dramatic criticism, notably in his work on the history of Shakespearean production. A great British literary Association Copy. In quarter cloth over paper covered boards, Very Good, corners rubbed, label darkened yet legible, front hinge cracked and holding nicely, many pages with scholarly marginal notations in pencil and 3 sheets of motes in pencil laid in, most likely in Harold Child's hand. . SIGNED. Limited and Numbered First Edition. Quarter Cloth. Very Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Association Copy.
