About This Item
London: W. Collins. Sons & Co. Ltd, 1927. Cloth. Good+. FIRST EDITION. 8vo, short catalogue to rear. Original blue buckram, lettered and ruled in darker blue. Rubbed, extremities bruised, nicks to head of spine. Foxed. A good+ of a late Tynan novel. Unusual in the trade, JiscLHD lists six copies, held by the British and Irish legal deposit libraries only. Katharine Tynan (18591931) was a prolific Irish novelist and poet of the Irish renaissance. Following the publication of her first poetry collection in 1885, her "father furnished a literary salon for her at Clondalkin, to which flocked the Olympians of Ireland's literary renaissance, including John O'Leary, Douglas Hyde, W. B. Yeats, and George Russell (A. E.)" (ODNB). Following her marriage, however, "Katharine set out to 'boil the pot', producing in all a staggering output of ninety-four novels, twenty-seven poetry collections, twenty-three collections of stories, eight volumes of memoirs, three biographies, three edited collections, two in memoria, two sundry collections, an anthology (the first to feature Joyce), a book of courtesies, a book of maxims, a history, a travelogue, and a Bible exegesis" (ibid).
