About This Item

New York: Harper & Brothers, 1871. Leather. Fair. 848p. Ex-library. An oversize hardcover book with black leather spine and corners and green marbled boards. Edges heavily scuffed and boards rubbed. Spine is crackly-looking and has an old sticker in the middle with the number 4. Pages are slightly brittle with age and will tear or chip easily if not handled gently. Small library stamps on title page and on front page of first issue. Occasional old pencil notations in the margins and newsprint smudges here and there; text otherwise unmarked. Small rip in the middle of page 193. Closed tears in pages 225 and 369-372. Small chip off page 311. Spotty stains in gutter of pages 502-503. Top margins of pages 803-806 have ben trimmed. Binding is tight. Volume 4 of the ladies' fashion magazine HARPER'S BAZAR (later spelled HARPER'S BAZAAR), containing all weekly issues from January 7 through December 30, 1871. Filled with lots of excellent black and white engravings of women's fashions, hairstyles, and more, including illustrations by Charles Stanley Reinhart ("Holiday Marketing," p. 5; "Pleasure with the Pain," p. 60), Charles G. Bush ("Honors," p. 252), W.L. Sheppard ("Looking for a Pattern," p. 329), Birket Foster ("The Weald of Surrey," 552-553), and William John Hennessy ("Grandmother's Darling" and "Golden Hours," p. 844-845). Features obituaries for the poets Alice and Phoebe Cary with engraved portraits, commentary on the marriage of Queen Victoria's daughter Louise to the Marquis of Lorne, a full-page portrait of Empress Augusta (wife of German Kaiser Wilhelm I), an article on the wife of Otto von Bismarck, and an article on the wedding of a couple with gigantism (Martin van Buren Bates and Anna Swan).
