About This Item
New York: Harper's Weekly, 1874. Good. Harper's Weekly: Journal of Civilization, Vol. XVIII No. 898, Harper's Weekly, New York, March 14 1874, 12 x 16.75 inches, 15 pp. (paginated 230-244).
Staple-bound pictorial wrappers; interior pages clean, unmarked; detailed lithograph illustrations throughout; edges moderately worn; previous fold to center of all pages, with approximately 1 inch of separation at the fold to fore-edge; overall good condition.
This is the Saturday, March 14, 1874 issue of Harper's Weekly magazine, Vol. XVIII No. 898. Interesting snapshot of the culture and interests of the late nineteenth century. Topics discussed in this issue include the Temperance movement, the Carlist Insurrection (or the Third Carlist War) in Spain, a recount of an Englishman's travels in Africa, and - as depicted on the cover - an argumentative session of the South Carolina Legislature in the Reconstruction Era. The author of this last article decries the behavior of some of the Black legislators, but notes that "it must be confessed that the colored members of the South Carolina Legislature could point to very unsavory precedents as to manner and language among white legislators of Southern and Northern States." Scarce; no copies found in OCLC or commerce as of February 2024.
