About This Item

[Harrisburg], February 8, 1802. 2 x 4½ inches. Laid paper. Small spindle-hole at center fold, some ink light at places; very good.

The Harrisburg Church was organized in 1794. Worship was first held in the loft of the jailhouse, then in the local court-house. The General Assembly of Pennsylvania granted permission for this lottery to be held to raise five thousand dollars to buy the land and erect a permanent home for the church.  (Kelker, History of Dauphin County, Pennsylvania)

A very rare Jeffersonian-era ticket, attractively printed by letterpress and with ornamental borders. This ticket-holder was awarded and paid out $5. Another example of this ticket sold in 2005 at auction for $750.
