About This Item

London: Sampson Low, Marston, Low & Searle,, 1874. First UK edition, third issue and the first with illustrations, from the sheets of the first issue which were trimmed, had illustrations inserted, and were bound in decorated cloth for the 1874 Christmas market, following the first issue in October. The issue was split between four colours of cloth without priority. The UK edition was preceded by the US edition of January 1874. Trollope's tale of Australian bush life was based upon the experiences of his son Frederic: "I was not loath to describe the troubles to which my son had been subjected, by the mingled accidents of heat and bad neighbours, on his station in the bush" (autobiography). Octavo. Original red cloth, spine and front cover lettered and decorated in gilt and black. 40pp. publisher's advertisements at rear, dated October 1874. Contemporary ownership signature to front free endpaper. A little shaken, hinges splitting but holding. A very good copy. Sadleir, Trollope 43; Wolff 6779; Tinker 2230.

Synopsis

Just a fortnight before Christmas, 1871, a young man, twenty-four years of age, returned home to his dinner about eight o'clock in the evening. He was married, and with him and his wife lived his wife's sister. At that somewhat late hour he walked in among the two young women, and another much older woman who was preparing the table for dinner. The wife and the wife's sister each had a child in her lap, the elder having seen some fifteen months of its existence, and the younger three months.
