About This Item

London: Spring Books, 1958. Paperback. Good+ condition: Text and plates are very good, clean and tight, and folio is secure. Green cloth, however, is a bit faded at both spines, and left spine has a museum lib. sticker. Book itself has several museum lib. marks: two plates, pencil notations on title and reverse, and stamps inside back covers; text block edges show foxing and smudging.). Color-pictorial wraps tied together with silk string through 4 holes at left spine edge. 58 pp. text with bw supporting illustrations followed by 63 single-sided sheets of color plates. Green cloth-covered board folio cover with gold lettering and bamboo stick to slide through three loop closures. Text in English. With an essay about the history of Japanese woodcuts, Suzuki Harunobu, and other Japanes artists. Includes a list of the 63 color plates, described, an appendix with types, techniques, terms, and more. Note that the plates include works by Harunobu but also by 5 additional artists. Translation by Hedda Stranska and reproductions by W. and B. Forman. All in all a lovely book, despite the library marks.
