Illustrated with with half-titles. 3 partly coloured folding maps & 2 panoramas on 1 folding sheet in rear pocket, 2 photogravure frontispieces, 12 colour plates, numerous b/w plates & text illustrations First Edition/First Printing. Bound in blue cloth boards with silver titles present to the front board and the spine. Boards have shelf-wear present to the extremities (boards rubbed and worn). Hinges repaired. No ownership marks present. Text is clean and free of marks. A well-told tale of arguably the most successful expedition from the Heroic Age of Antarctic exploration. The Nimrod expedition under Sir Ernest Shackleton achieved the first ascent of Mount Erebus, reached the magnetic South Pole, discovered the path to the Central Antarctic Plateau over the Beardmore Glacier, and almost reached the very pole itself, though under dramatic circumstances; almost out of food and ill with dysentery, the return trip became a desperate race against time to get back to base before the Nimrod left. EB; 4to 11" - 13" tall .
