The Nimrod expedition under Sir Ernest Shackleton achieved the first ascent of Mount Erebus, reached the magnetic South Pole, discovered the path to the Central Antarctic Plateau over the Beardmore Glacier, and almost reached the very pole itself, though under dramatic circumstances; almost out of food and ill with dysentery, the return trip became a desperate race against time to get back to base before the Nimrod left.
