HEIMARBEIT-AUSSTELLUNG FRANKFURT A/M FRÜHLING 1908 [binding caption title]
by [Binding and Calligraphy]
- Used
Frankfurt, 1908. Two leaves in manuscript, on stiff card. Folio. Laid into, and formerly sewn into, handcrafted full soft calf presentation album, stamped and decorated in blind, with pictorial vignette, with silk moiré endsheets. Spine quite rubbed, with short crack, but sound, lower edge of one endsheet frayed, binding very good; smudge affecting five letters in the manuscript, but it is otherwise about fine. A handsome presentation of a calligraphic honorary presentation, made on the occasion of the Homeworkers' Exhibition, to Jakob Hermann Epstein, chairman of the board of the exhibition, in recognition of his services to the exhibition, signed by eight officials on the second leaf, 19 April 1908. The manuscript itself is beautifully rendered in red, blue and brown inks, with six gilt highlighted initials and four red decorated initials, with border ornaments in red.

Description:
New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons / The Knickerbocker Press, 1927. Half-Leather. Very Good/No Jacket. Corners a bit rubbed, boards faintly soiled, ink date and owner bookplate of Robert N. Cherry on front flyleaf. 1927 Half-Leather. iv, 325 pp. 8vo. No binder's ticket, but appears to be a contemporary custom rebinding: blue leather spine and corners over blue cloth, gilt titles and rules, top edge gilt, new end sheets. "The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin is the traditional name for the unfinished record of his own life written by Benjamin Franklin from 1771 to 1790; however, Franklin himself appears to have called the work his Memoirs. Although it had a tortuous publication history after Franklin's death, this work has become one of the most famous and influential examples of an autobiography ever written. Franklin's account of his life is divided into four parts, reflecting the different periods at which he wrote them.
