"HELLAS AND ROME shows how classical culture is a definitive unity, how it can be separated on the one hand in time and style from the civilization of earlier times in the Mediterranean area and the Near East, and on the other hand how it can be separated from the culture of Christianity which had grown up during the same period within the territory of classical civilization. Every expert knows and every attentive reader of this book will recognize the difference between the Greek and the Roman mind, If the beginning of the period is compared with the end it will seem inconceivable that they should be related. They do, however, merge into one living unit when the historical events which represent the destinies of both nations are considered,"
