About This Item
Washington: Privately Printed, 1915. First edition. Cloth. Very Good. 10" by 7". None. An uncommon, association copy of this poetry collection by noted plant pathologist, Erwin Frink Smith. This collection was privately printed and has been gifted by the author's wife to one Dr Clinton. This particular copy is out of series to the limitation page where it states 'Five hundred and ten copies of this book have been printed on Italian hand-made paper..' The author, Erwin Smith has still signed below where the number should be. The first, and only edition of this anthology. The letter loosely inserted is addressed to Dr Clinton and regards the gifting of this book 'which is not for sale'. 'He was gradually distributing them among his friends and I am glad to give them to those who appreciate them'. It is then signed, Ruth Warren Smith (Mrs Erwin F Smith). Illustrated, with a portrait plate of a lady looking out to sea. This is a collection of odes, songs, sonnets and biography, all dedicated to Smith's late wife Charlotte May Buffett. Erwin Frink Smith was known for producing a major role in demonstrating that bacteria can cause plant disease. He was also noted for hiring many female botanists at a time that this was not a common thing to do. A charming collection of poetry. In the original quarter paper vellum with paper covered boards. Externally, sound with some light rubbing to the head and tail of spine. Vellum paper is lightly spotted to the spine. Two light tidemarks to the rear board at the head and tail of board. Prior owner's inscription to the recto of front endpaper. 'Clinton'. Loosely inserted is a letter from the author's wife to a friend. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Very Good
