Foreward and Biographical Sketches by Carroll D. Hall. 91pp. 32 reproductions. Half calf and decorated cloth. Index to brands. Slightest of rubbing to spine ends. A fine copy. Very scarce, especially in this condition (the soft calf spine of this title is notorious for being well worn or extremely scuffed). One of the most important works on California cattle brands. 32 reproductions of the original manuscript cattle brand certificates issued at Sutter's Fort prior to the Gold Rush, from 1845 to 1848. Each of the reproduced certificates is accompanied by translations and biographical sketches of the ranches to whom the marks were registered. The Argonaut Book Shop was founded in 1941 in the middle of the financial district of San Francisco. The Argonaut was a founding member of the Antiquarian Booksellers\' Association of America and has been a member in good standing ever since. The Shop is now located just three blocks from Union Square in downtown San Francisco and is open six days a week. Parking facilities include ample street space and a parking garage close by.
