About This Item
East Aurora, New York: The Roycrofters, MCMIII. [1903]. Thin folio. 36pp. Silk ribbon marker. Brown suede and papered boards with sunning, scattered stains and small scuffs, half inch loss at heel of spine. Binding good only; internally, clean and very good.
One of an unknown quantity of tall copies of this appealing presentation of Henry David Thoreau's essay on friendship.
Two initials and the signed colophon were illumined by Grace Fournier. Fournier was the daughter of Alexis Jean Fournier (1865-1948), the "court painter" of the Roycrofters who is extensively profiled in Head, Heart, and Hand: Elbert Hubbard and the Roycrofters.
The book's ornaments were designed by Samuel Warner; the typography by Newell White; the presswork by George Parker. Provenance, in light pencil: "M.L. Goss. 1906." -perhaps a relative of Frederick Llewellyn Goss (1847-1915) of The Goss Printing Company of Chicago.
