Glossy card binding with wraparounds, bottom fr. wraparound clipped which is odd as price remains, , fine bar slight spine fading. col. f/piece+viii+250, 239 in end plate block om pp.155-242, 4 others on 3 ex-pag. pp (3 coloured), 3 small text figs, t.p. says '250 illustrations' but can only find 247!. Internally clean, tight and unmarked. Apelles was 'the most celebrated painter of the ancient world' but though none of his work survived, Gombrich explores how his reputation and some of his techniques inspired Renaissance artists, notably Bosch and Da Vinci. 17.5 cm x 25 cm
