About This Item

Boston: Little, Brown, and Company, 1935., 1935. First edition. First edition. The first appearance of Mr. Moto, a professional agent. Fine, bright, clean copy in original yellow cloth, in price-clipped dust jacket with light professional restoration to the corners. This Haycraft/Queen Cornerstone title introduces Mr. Moto to relate to the adventures of a broken-down American stunt flyer, Casey Lee, who is stranded in Tokyo. Lee is sour on life and when he is stranded in Japan he agrees to do undercover work for Japanese intelligence. As Lee moves around the west coast of Asia he recovers his pride and sense of identity, and destroys the secret aviation fuel formula to prevent it from falling into the hands of America's enemies. Mr. Moto is a Japanese aristocrat, university-educated, and fluent in many languages. In this novel Moto is more ruthless and less sympathetic than in any of the five later novels. A handsome copy of a difficult title.
