About This Item

Garden City, New York: Garden City Publishing Co., 1941. Hardcover. Very Good/Good. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. Herbert Morton Stoops. Children's picture book of the third part of "The Song of Hiawatha" (1855). Though the name Hiawatha is derived from a historical figure associated with the formation of the Iroquois League, Longfellow's character is fictional. Slim hardcover in illustrated boards with illustrated endpapers just a few pages long. Illustrations in colour and in b&w. Dust jacket has several short closed tears and moderate wear but is essentially complete. Front flap crumpled along edge. Inscription on the reverse of the ffep identifies this as a prize copy presented in 1943. Open (and empty) envelop tipped on to rear paste down. Minor toning. Mild shelf wear.

Synopsis

From the book:The Song of Hiawatha is based on the legends and stories of many North American Indian tribes, but especially those of the Ojibway Indians of northern Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. They were collected by Henry Rowe Schoolcraft, the reknowned historian, pioneer explorer, and geologist. He was superintendent of Indian affairs for Michigan from 1836 to 1841. Schoolcraft married Jane, O-bah-bahm-wawa-ge-zhe-go-qua (The Woman of the Sound Which the Stars Make Rushing Through the Sky), Johnston. Jane was a daughter of John Johnston, an early Irish fur trader, and O-shau-gus-coday-way-qua (The Woman of the Green Prairie), who was a daughter of Waub-o-jeeg (The White Fisher), who was Chief of the Ojibway tribe at La Pointe, Wisconsin. Jane and her mother are credited with having researched, authenticated, and compiled much of the material Schoolcraft included in his Algic Researches (1839) and a revision published in 1856 as The Myth of Hiawatha. It was this latter revision that Longfellow used as the basis for The Song of Hiawatha.

Reviews

On Apr 25 2022, a reader said:
The story of Hiawatha's childhood, growing up close to nature and influenced by his grandmother Nokomis, is interesting indeed. Hiawatha's use of poetic devices makes this work vivid and appealing.

About Pulp & Circumstance

Welcome to Pulp & Circumstance on Biblio. Once a brick and mortar bookseller, I am pleased that I can now offer scarce and/or collectible books and other items via this platform.

P&C strives to ensure that all items are clean and fairly described. Packages will be wrapped with care and dispatched as soon as feasible, usually on the next business day.

We do not use stock photos. All our photos are of the actual item offered for sale. We try to include the publishers' own descriptions of content by including photos of dust jacket flaps and back covers so far as they seem useful, and we also use photos to show material flaws where we can.

The "Pulp & Circumstance" watermark you might notice in some of our photos does not, of course, appear on any of the items themselves.

Please note that the colour in our photos often fails to come out right. The hue shifts a bit due to the limitations of our equipment, the lighting in our workshop, and of course my own lack of photographic expertise.

Shipping costs per book are always cheaper when more than one book is sent in the same package. Read more about shipping charges in "Terms of Sale" below.

Feel free to ask any questions you might have by email. We will usually respond within 24 hours. Happy browsing!
