Morton holds honours degrees of Cambridge, London and the Faculte de Rennes. He has made a life study of the psychology of the adolescent and has travelled three times round the world in an effort to bring together the youth of the Commonwealth. Here he tells the story of youth in search of the riot of adventure and the romance of history; a story written out of an experience of adventure and high-altitude camping in many lands, including Canada; a story testifying throughout to the author's deep conviction that youth can best be served by an experience of `nomadism' such as takes him away from the herd to face the testing of wild places, rough weather and simple food. Dr. Morton believes that to be fully effective this education of nomadism should be shot through with colour and fashion of hero-worship. Consequently, in their travels, the hero of history and legend takes his place alongside those heroes who have made this story. Here then is a record of youth's adventures in the remotest Highlands of Scotland, over roadless passes in the Alps, and along the waterways of the Canadian backwoods-youth caught up in the vision of a `Hero'. It is a story that will be read by parents and youth workers, and all who enjoy a tale of travels and hard voyaging held together over the years by an amiable fiction or two; and, for those who seek it, by a philosophy of life not without significance in an age which is striving for an Elizabethan renaissance in the spirit of the rising generation. A spirit, the author believes, that will bring back a faith in individual personality and the redemption of youth from the depressive animal behaviour of the herd. .
