About This Item

London: John C. Nimmo, 1888. First illustrated edition [1888]. Nicely bound copy of one of Surtees' gentle English social comedies, illustrated with twelve hand colored plates. Newer binding (probably early to mid twentieth century) of half crimson morocco over maroon boards, spine gilt lettering, attached ribbon bookmark, gilt top, other edges untrimmed, 519 pages. Externally near fine with a light bit of rubbing to the corner and spine ends, renewed endpapers, some evidence of an old repair in the inner margin of the title page, pages lightly age-toned but quite clean with no names or other markings, some scant scattered finger soil in a few margins. Plates are in near fine condition with two of the tissue protectors absent. A sound and handsome copy.. First Edition Thus. Hard Cover. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
