About This Item

London and Melbourne: Hutchinson & Co., c1940. Paperback. Very Good. 7" by 4". Not Stated. A scarce second world war pamphlet offering advice for volunteers of the Home Guard In this scarce work, Duncan Fitzwilliams relays hints and guidance to help those joining the Home Guard. Hopefully more organised than Dads Army. Initially called the Local Defence Volunteers, the Home Guard was an armed citizen militia supporting the British Army during the Second World War between 1940 and 1944. Comprised of local volunteers that were otherwise ineligible for military service, such as those who were too young or old to join the regular army , the role of the Home Guard's 1.5 million volunteers was to act as a secondary defence force in case of invasion by the forces of Nazi Germany. With chapters on compass reading, firearms, dealing with an enemy, and defending villages, this guide was designed to help volunteers who had little training or experience in scouting, observing, or resisting an armed opposition. Includes diagrams to demonstrate sequences of attack and self-defence. Undated. Dated using JISC from copies held at the British Library. In the publisher's original red paper wraps. Externally, generally smart. A few marks to the front cover and some light foxing at the border of the rear cover. There is a very small tear in cover at the bottom of the front joint. Internally, firmly bound. A little foxed to the title page, with light scattered foxing throughout. Very Good
