Aimee Lee: "The Hirsute series is about the practice of thinking about hair in abundance to overcome images of hair loss in relation to an inconclusive but life-altering diagnosis of an incurable disease." "In 2014, I met with a doctor in Korea about a potentially life threatening disease that required two more years of doctor's visits, second opinions, treatments, and stress. Because it was a rare and incurable disease, I had looked online for information - the doctors had very little to share - but stopped quickly because the information was so devastating and the images so disturbing. In this particular doctor's office, he asked if I had searched online, and I said that I had. Without warning, he said, 'So you've seen this,' while showing me his phone with an image of the worst-case scenario for this disease, a disfigured head with central line hair loss. That image was seared into many levels of my consciousness and though he could not confirm if this would happen to me, I began to worry that my hair was falling out. "Someone recommended that I try to reverse this scar by visualizing lush hairlines and healthy heads of hair. In this spirit, I began a daily practice of drawing hair in abundance. I plan to continue these books until I reach some peace."
