Paris,: Librairie d'Amyot,, 1854.. 2 volumes: [iv], xvi, 580, [iv]; [iv], 599, [i] pp. Large 8vo (16 x 24 cm.). Finely bound by Paul Affolter in 3/4 straight grained brown morocco, spine with 5 raised bands, gilt lettered and numbered, uncut, top edges red (a few insignificant rubbings; spines slightly discoloured). With 117 woodcut plates and illustrations of which 49 printed on chinese paper and pasted down. The rare first edition, and one of the few large paper copies printed on vélin. First historical study on the subject and a major work of reference. Apart from some scattered foxing, a fine copy in a very solid and nice binding. Vicard VI col. 73-74.
