Paris: F. Sayy, 1864. Third edition. Publisher's dark green pebbled cloth, covers ruled in blind, spine lettered in gilt, pale brown coated endpapers with advertisements printed in black, uncut. Partially unopened. Clean, mainly marginal tear to page 181/182 with no loss of text. Front free-endpaper not present. Minimal wear to corners, text spotted, the hand colored plates bright and fresh.Collating [iv], iv, 216, pages with hand-colored half-title and seventy- nine fine hand-colored engraved plates of Butterflies and Moths. An excellent copy.
This work was first published in Paris by Pauquet, 1834-35. Pierre-Hippolyte Lucas (1814-1899) was a French entomologist and was an assistant-naturalist at the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle. From 1839 to 1842 he studied fauna as part of the scientific Commission on the exploration of Algeria.
