About This Item

Binder's copy. Boards detached, and binding is split at pp. 218/219. Edges scuffed. Mild soiling to endpapers. Armorial bookplate of John Lord Sheffield, Sheffield Place, Sussex pasted inside front cover. Interior very clean.
This is a book of Roman history which belonged to John Baker Holroyd, 1st Earl of Sheffield (1735-1821). Sheffield was a notable English and Irish politician, perhaps best remembered in the literary world as a friend and editor of Edward Gibbon, the English historian whose Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire remains the definitive text on the subject. Among other contributions, Sheffield compiled Gibbon's letters and diaries after Gibbon's passing into Memoirs of My Life and Writings, one of the first examples of a modern autobiography. Sheffield contributed enormously to 18th century scholarship on the Roman Empire, making this research volume of Rollin and Crevier from his personal library a fascinating piece of history.
