About This Item

Rome: Nicolai Et Palearini. Good with no dust jacket. 1742. Hardcover. Xx, 475 pp. Quarto, bound in tobacco brown buckram. Title to spine in black. Older marbled endpapers. Interior ownership marks of Rev. Luke V. McCabe (1846-1930) , rector of Saint Matthias in Bala, PA. Title page in red and black. Lovely historiated initials, wide margins. Very nicely printed. Some foxing and occasional grubbiness, title page has ownership stamps, blank before that has a few lines of very neatly done notes, a very few underlinings and neat old marginalia in the text, slight old pipe tobacco smell, sewing showing occasionally, one leaf loose, but still quite usable. A Catholic archbishop and an Italian historian, Fontanini started working on a history of his native Friuli but only managed the first portion of the work, on Aquileia, one of the largest cities in classical antiquity. Fontanini died before the book was finished and it was completed by his nephew, Domenico. Entirely in Latin. ; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 475 pages .
