[London]: Albion Press Printed / Published by James Cundee and Sold by C. Chapple, 1805. Hardcover. Near Fine. First edition. Large quarto. 467, [8], [3] ads pp., half-title present and especially wide-margins. Illustrated, complete with all plates including a folding map of the Island of St. Domingo, frontispiece portrait of "The Author in Conversation with a Private Soldier in the Black Army," a letter by Toussaint Louverture reproduced in holograph facsimile, and several dramatic full-page engraved plates. Rebound in full modern leather with green morocco spine, black morocco boards, titled in gilt on spine and stamped with gilt device on both boards, extra spine label laid in.

Contemporary brief ink notation on front flyleaf, original endpapers intact and archivally reinforced along inner hinges of endpapers and a few pages, light foxing on title page and a few pages of plates and text, two-inch chip to corner of one page of text (not affecting printed text), else a handsome and near fine copy, with the text and plates otherwise fresh and clean. An important history of Haiti.
