About This Item
J. Johnson, London., 1795. Second edition. Octavo. pp xvi, 522, [1] advert. Eighteenth-century binding of full tree calf, decorated gilt spine, red title-label lettered in gilt, outer gilt dentelles. The author witnessed the beginning stages of the Reign of Terror and although in principle she was in sympathy with the revolution and its aims she was horrified by its excesses: "The rapid changes, the violent, the base, and nefarious assassinations, which have clouded the vivid prospect that began to spread a ray of joy and gladness over the gloomy horizon of oppression, cannot fail to chill the sympathizing bosom, and palsy intellectual vigour." 1873 ownership inscription on front free endpaper. Some deep rubbing affecting a small area of the upper board. Corners a little rubbed. Some insect damage to lower margins of prelims otherwise very good and with the contents in excellent state. Rare.
