William Sheares, 1636. 2nd Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. 32mo - over 4 - 5" tall. Historie of the Life and Death of Mary Stuart Queene of Scotland" by William Udall, second edition, printed by John Haviland and published in 1636. This book is a translation from Camden's Annales which was first published in 1624. The book was handsomely rebound in the 19th century. The opening sentence of this history captures the court intrigues of 16th century Europe. The life, death, and variable fortunes of the most gracious Queene, Mary Stuart Queene of Scotland. Anno 1559 The French King, Henry the second, for the benefit of his sonne the Dolphin King, and Marie Queene of Scots (casting his eyes upon England) did not withdraw his French Souldiers out of Scotland, as he had promised, but sent secretly more daily into Scotland, and dealt vehemently with the Pope, to pronounce Queene Elizabeth an Heretike, and illegitimate, which the Emperour and the King of Spaine, most diligently, but covertly, sought to hinder: yet had the Guises drawne the French King into such a sweet hope of adjoyning England unto the Crowne of France, by the title of their Niece the Queene of Scots, that he openly claimed the same in the right of his sonne and daughter in law: And commanded them, when he could not obtaine his purpose at Rome, to use this title in all their letters patents; Francis and Marie by the grace of God, of Scotland, England, and Ireland, King and Queene, and caused the armes of England, together with the armes of Scotland, to be painted in the walls, buildings, and in the household-stuffe: and also to be put into the Heralds coats.

Description:
London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1910. Paperback. This is the 1910 vintage pulp paperback, the so-called "First Cheap Edition." My African Journey is Churchill's travelogue on Britain's possessions in East Africa, written while he was serving as Undersecretary of State for the Colonies. This book is notable, among other things, for being the only one of his many books to contain photographs ostensibly taken by the author. In the summer of 1907 Churchill left England for five months, making his way after working stops in southern Europe to Africa for "a tour of the east African domains." In early November, Churchill would kill a rhinoceros, the basis of the striking illustration on the front cover of the British first edition of his eventual book. By now a seasoned and financially shrewd author, Churchill arranged to profit doubly from the trip, first by serializing articles in The Strand Magazine and then by publishing a book based substantially upon them. In November 1908 Hodder and Stoughton… Read More

My African Journey is Churchill's travelogue on Britain's possessions in East Africa, written while he was serving as Undersecretary of State for the Colonies. This book is notable, among other things, for being the only one of his many books to contain photographs ostensibly taken by the author. This copy is the elusive first state of the first American edition. The first U.S. edition is far scarcer than the British first edition, with only 1400 copies sold (encompassing all three states), in contrast to more than 8000 copies of the more frequently seen British edition. WINNER OF THE PEGASUS PRIZE FOR LITERATURE AND THE BOOKER PRIZE. Used. Very Good/Very Good unclipped original $17.95 dust jacket. Summary: "The Bone People, first published in 1984 by Spiral, New Zealand. About this book: The Bone People is an unusual story of love. It is unusual in the telling, the subject matter, and the form of love that the story depicts. This is in no way a romance; it is filled with violence, fear, and twisted emotions. At the story's core, however, are three people who struggle very hard to figure out what love is and how to find it. Hulme won New Zealand's Pegasus Prize for Literature (1984) for The Bone People. Then the book went on to win the prestigious Booker Prize (1985).
