About This Item

London: Hutchinson & Co., 1905. Cloth. Very Good. 7" by 4.5". George Cruikshank. Henry Fielding's final novel in a smart two-volume set, illustrated by George Cruikshank. A two-volume set in the publisher's original cloth bindings. Bookplate to the front paste down of Volume I. Illustrated with four plates to each volume. Collated, complete. The History of Amelia was the final novel written by Henry Fielding and was first published in 1751. It follows the married life of Amelia and Captain William Booth; indeed, the main themes concern marriage and feminine intelligence. Consequently, there was much discussion and critical analysis of this story when it first appeared. Illustrated throughout by the notable British caricaturist George Cruikshank (1792-1878). Undated, dated through copies held at the British Library. In the publisher's original cloth bindings. Externally fairly smart, though darkened to the spine with small losses and age toning to the spine labels, and a little bumping to the upper extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are mostly bright and clean with some offsetting to the endpapers. Very Good
