DJ glossy with stormy ocean scene and waves high on lighthouse on front, black spine and back, praise in thin yellow border from New York Times, Time, New York Book Review and others. DJ has wide 1/4" tear at bottom front tip, tiny tear at bottom back tip, creases along edges. Near Good DJ/Very Fine book. Volume II: "The Wars of the British: 1603-1776. Silver lettering very bright on spine, 544 pages with illustrations throughout, most in color, published 2001. DJ glossy with a color-illustration of British officer on front, spine and back black. DJ has micronick with no wear at top front tips, light scratch on back. Near Fine DJ/Very Fine book. Volume III: "The Fate of Empire": 1776-2000. Very large, heavy book, 2002, silver lettering bright on spine, 576 pages. DJ glossy with a color photo of Houses of Parliament on front, black spine and back, praise from the New Republic and others. DJ has tiny tear at spine top edge. Near Very Fine DJ/Very Fine book. Overall, a Near Fine set.

Synopsis

Simon Schama explores the forces that tore Britain apart during two centuries of dynamic change - transforming outlooks, allegiances and boundaries. From the beginning of July 1637, battles raged on for 200 years - both at home and abroad, on sea and on land, up and down the length of burgeoning Britain, across Europe, America and India. Most would be wars of faith - waged on wide-ranging grounds of political or religious conviction. But as wars of religious passions gave way to campaigns for profit, the British people did come together in the imperial enterprise of 'Britannia Incorporated'. The British Wars is a story of revolution and reaction, inspiration and disenchantment, of progress and catastrophe, and Schama's evocative narrative brings it vividly to life.
