About This Item

London: Bentley, two volumes, first edition. 1859.. Hardcover. Good. Original dark red blindstamped cloth, backstrips titled in gilt. viii,339, iv,365, pages. The two front free endpapers have split along the gutters from the pastedown endpapers, but are still securely bound. The bindings, including the hinges, are very strong and secure. The bottom board of volume one is a little damp marked and stained, and as a whole the bindings, although remaining strong, have some rubbing and marks, especially of the top and tail of the backstrips. Some slight spotting and soiling of the endpapers and prelims, otherwise the text is in very good clean condition. Includes a biographical sketch of W. H. Russell of The Times, the first war correspondent, who reported from the Crimean War.
