About This Item
New York: Harper and Brothes, 1843. First American Edition. Hardcover. Near Very Good. First edition and first printing per BAL 16340. The errors of the first printing are present and the errata page is present in volume III.The binding is not cloth. It is half leather with marbleized boards, marbleized end sheets and marbleized page edges. A nicely printed book plate (for Arthur Romeyn Gray) is in each of the volumes. We have found no record of Harper binding first editions in leather so perhaps Gray rebound them. (Binding appears to be 19th c or early 20th c) Volumes I and II have the maps and volume III the facsimile signature ... For all three the paper is a lighter color, but the pages are lithographed, so they do not appear to be modern photographic facsimiles. Perhaps they are on nonacidic paper. Or perhaps they were cleaned when rebound. The books are solid and tight, though the covers show wear. The top one third of the leather spine for volume III was missing so it has been professionally replaced. Nonetheless it looks newish and without wear as compared to the rest of the set.
