London: Thomas Nelson, 1851 pictorial gilt embossed backstrip detached, book needs rebacking and restoration, contents intact and tidy, one two leaf section stands proud, corners bumped and rubbed through at tips, blind embossed boards, hinges cracked, engraved title and frontis is foxed, xvi 716pp + engraved plates, all edges gilt, final leaf of contents and first leaf of book proper has been trimmed to fore edge, first edition in one volume format, pages are double column, engraved plates generally have six different animals depicted on the same plate, clean internally with very infrequent occurences of occasional single spots of foxing, suitable for restoration or a new binding. First Thus. Cloth. Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7? - 9? tall.
Synopsis
A History of the Earth, and Animated Nature is a fascinating work of natural history. It was first published in 1774 in eight volumes, these volumes brought together a history of the earth with a description of its geographical features and species. Oliver Goldsmith was a novelist, poet and journalist as well as the author of many works of natural history. He is now best known for his 1766 novel, The Vicar of Wakefield .
